As a Cathodic Protection company we deal with many different enquiries, some easier and some more difficult than others and yet all unique in their own way.

In June 2015, one of our clients encountered a situation that they had no solution for. Theft of infrastructure kept recurring in the area, their AC power supplies, cables and transformers were being stolen which interfered with their CP System, leaving their pipeline unprotected against corrosion.

This led to our client having to find alternative methods to protect their pipeline. Cathtect rose to the occasion and took on the challenge to come up with an innovative solution to the problem.

Durasafe

After lots of collaboration, we were excited to inform our client that we had found a solution. We could supply them with a Solar Powered Rectifier unit, housed in a concrete Durasafe. This meant utilising renewable energy through a solar power supply system, whilst minimising the chance of theft and vandalism at the same time.

Cathtect’s Solar Powered Rectifier Unit is powered by a DC battery bank with controllable automatic output voltage. The battery bank is charged during the daylight hours by suitably rated solar panels.

As the unit does not use electricity, it minimises overall power usage and reduces the client’s carbon footprint, making this system a sustainable development. The size and length of cable needed are minimised, which reduces the chance of cable and equipment theft.

Installation of this unit reduces the capital costs as well as lowers maintenance and no ongoing power cost is incurred, Innovation at its best.
